Me emocion\u00f3 escuchar ayer que la ex Secretaria de Estado Hillary Clinton est\u00e1 practicando Pranayama, tambi\u00e9n llamada respiraci\u00f3n alternada por las fosas nasales. Respirar y caminar por el bosque para absorber los beneficios del sol y los rayos de la luz del bosque son una forma genial de restaurar la salud del cerebro y el bienestar despu\u00e9s del rigor de cualquier periodo estresante de la vida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La antigua sabidur\u00eda yogui sugiere que \u201csi controlas la respiraci\u00f3n, controlas la mente\u201d y pranayama se ense\u00f1a f\u00e1cilmente a la gente de todas las edades para mejorar su auto-regulaci\u00f3n. Los yoguis han sabido desde hace mucho tiempo los beneficios de estas pr\u00e1cticas y no fue hasta hace poco que la ciencia biom\u00e9dica investig\u00f3 algunos de los complejos sustratos subyacentes a estos beneficios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El ejercicio de pranayama involucra la alternaci\u00f3n de pautas de respiraci\u00f3n para facilitar el control del Sistema Nervioso Aut\u00f3nomo, la dominaci\u00f3n hemisf\u00e9rica cerebral, y as\u00ed, estados de conciencia, incluyendo el estado de \u00e1nimo. Estos m\u00e9todos var\u00edan entre diferentes disciplinas, incluyendo yoga Hatha, yoga Kundalini y yoga Kriya; sin embargo, cualquier disciplina utilizada, la pr\u00e1ctica del pranayama ayuda a ganar control sobre el ritmo ultradiano y puede conducir a la sincron\u00eda hemisf\u00e9rica cerebral en la que ning\u00fan hemisferio domina, sino que ambos funcionan coherentemente. Cuando la fosa nasal derecha est\u00e1 abierta, el cerebro izquierdo est\u00e1 en su ciclo de 90-120 de dominaci\u00f3n ultradiana y la fosa nasal izquierda est\u00e1 relacionada con el cerebro derecho\u2026 un mayor flujo de aire en la fosa nasal izquierda se correlaciona con la fase de reposo, y un mayor flujo de aire en la fosa nasal derecha se correlaciona con la fase de actividad. El hipot\u00e1lamo integra y regula esos dos estados fisiol\u00f3gicos de reposo y actividad. Con la interrupci\u00f3n del eje Hipot\u00e1lamo-Pituitaria-Suprarrenal (HPA, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s), los ritmos de reposo actividad tambi\u00e9n se interrumpen. Esto sugiere que las actividades que vuelven a regular esos ritmos \u2013 tales como ejercicios de respiraci\u00f3n espec\u00edficos de pranayama y\u00f3guico, de manera espec\u00edfica forzar la respiraci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de una sola fosa nasal \u2013 estimula el hemisferio contralateral y el sistema nervioso simp\u00e1tico ipsilateral por medio del hipot\u00e1lamo (Shannahoff-Khalsa, 2007)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al cerciorarse qu\u00e9 hemisferio domina en determinado momento, uno puede escoger cambiarlo con ejercicios de respiraci\u00f3n. Al ense\u00f1ar esos m\u00e9todos a clientes, les permitimos relajarse m\u00e1s f\u00e1cilmente y a enfocar la atenci\u00f3n. Un hemisferio izquierdo m\u00e1s activo es m\u00e1s propicio para la actividad intelectual. Por ejemplo, recostarse en el lado izquierdo del cuerpo provoca que la fosa nasal izquierda se llene y por lo tanto reduzca el dominio del cerebro derecho y esto mejora las actividades intelectuales o relacionadas con el trabajo. Recostarse de ese lado ayuda cuando la gente se siente dispersa o disociada. Recostarse del lado derecho del cuerpo, lo que han sugerido los yoguis, ayuda a dormir, disminuye el dominio del lado izquierdo del cerebro y abre la fosa nasal izquierda y activa el lado derecho del cerebro para el trabajo interno, la creatividad, relajaci\u00f3n y sue\u00f1o. Ense\u00f1o la respiraci\u00f3n enfocada en abrir la fosa nasal derecha a los ni\u00f1os con trastorno por d\u00e9ficit de atenci\u00f3n e hiperactividad o TDAH (ADHD, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) o a aquellos con una prueba de ansiedad para activar el hemisferio izquierdo. Escribo extensamente sobre esto en mi libro acerca del trauma, Ritmos de Recuperaci\u00f3n y tambi\u00e9n discuto esto en un art\u00edculo reciente en Psychiatric Times. Las investigaciones sobre la respiraci\u00f3n del yoga para el TEPT muestran una reducci\u00f3n en la severidad de los s\u00edntomas, depresi\u00f3n y riesgo de utilizar alcohol y drogas.
